Nearly 4,000 Canadians die by suicide each year – an average of almost 11 suicides a day. It affects people of all ages and backgrounds. More than 75% of suicides involve men, but women attempt suicide 3 to 4 times more often. In 2012, suicide accounted for 17% of deaths among youth aged 10 to 14, 28% among youth aged 15 to 19, and 25% among young adults aged 20 to25. After accidents, it is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15 – 34 (Navaneelan, 2012;Stats Canada, 2015;CAMH Monitor eReport 2013).
The Apple Creek Seventh-day Adventist Community Church in partnership with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences will hold the fourth annual Health and Wellness Expo on October 16, 2016. We have made youth mental health our priority and the theme for this year. The goal isto engage and serve the community in partnership with local services and organizations, with an aim to improve quality of life by promoting mental, physical, spiritual health and wellness. The event will kick off at 11:00am at The Markham Civic Center,101 Town Centre Boulevard Markham, ON L3R 8G5.
Event objectives are as follows:
Keynote address will start at 12:30 p.m. Topic: Youth Mental Health and Suicidality by Dr. Ian Dawe,MHSc, MD, FRCP(C) Program Chief and Medical Director, Mental Health, Trillium Health Partners. There will be two interactive breakout sessions. Topics include: 1. Concurrent Disorders in Transitional Aged Youth presented by Ontario Shores and; 2. Depression presented by Sharon McLeod.
The Expo will showcase approximately 20 health-promoting booths focused on relevant health, wellness, safety and social topics. There will be entertainment by local artists, face painting and free giveaways throughout the day. The Expo will conclude at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free!!!
